Featuring hand-stitched, large-scale alligator straps in brown and a dark grey dial, this watch is an absolute masterpiece! Apart from displaying the hours and minutes, they have a subsidiary seconds dial at 4 o’clock, a power-reserve indicator between 10 and 11 o'clock, and an analog date at 7 o’clock with an integrated moon-phase display. This timepiece also has a three-part case with a sapphire-crystal case back, a screw-down crown, and a moon-phase corrector push piece in the side of the case. The corrector limits the water resistance of the watches to 60 meters. What Are Watch Complications?

This is a question I often get asked. When referring to watches, "complications" are any functions beyond hours, minutes, and seconds on a timepiece. When a watch only has these three functions, it is called simple movement. Extra features such as a chronograph, day/date, and automatic winding, do not themselves make a watch complicated.

It is the combination of these features which will make a watch a complicated piece. The more features, the more skill and work is required to design and repair these watches. A complex watch may have a thousand parts, while a regular day/date chronograph will only have around 250. These particularly complex pieces are referred to as "grandes complications".

"Ultra-complicated" watches were innovated by ambitious watchmakers looking to add numerous very complex functions, some including astrological functions. These watches are made in small numbers and can cost several hundreds of thousands of dollars. Companies such as Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin are amongst the more highly-regarded makers of these ultra-complicated timepieces.

There are a lot of labels placed on watches, and I'm often asked what some of the differences are. The word "Swiss" alone implies quality, and thus watchmakers want to apply the term to their timepieces in anyway possible. For this reason, it is important to note the exact meaning of these terms.

Swiss Made- This means that the watch was completely constructed in Switzerland. All of the movement, as well as the rest of the watch must be assembled in Switzerland. In addition to this, at least 50% of the parts themselves must be made in Switzerland. ("Swiss Watch" has the same definition)

Swiss Watch Movement- This term speaks specifically to the movement itself. The movement parts must be made, assembled, and tested in Switzerland.(Note Swiss Movement must be spelled out on the watch, an abbreviation like, "Swiss Movt" is not acceptable.)

Swiss Case- The stamping and other assembling must take place in Switzerland. In addition, 50% of the manufacturing cost must occur in Switzerland.

Swiss Quartz- This term may be used to imply quartz movement, however if it is on the outside of the case, it must meet the same requirements as a "Swiss Watch".

Swiss Parts- This simply means that the parts of the watch themselves were made in Switzerland, not the watch itself.
